- Born 1542, executed 1587. Believed Mary’s execution, ordered by Elizabeth I, final reason Philip II needed to launch Spanish Armada. Few in Tudor England had such an eventful life, though for Mary, Queen of Scots, it was to end in tragedy. Mary was Elizabeth I’s cousin. Mary brought up Catholic putting her at odds with Protestant Elizabeth. Mary’s father, James V of Scotland, died when she was 1. At such young age, Scottish lords found it difficult to respect her and by 1548, Mary sent to France for own safety. As a young girl, Mary lived in France and married the king of France, Francis II. She was 15 and he was 14. She had very strong views on religion.
